Although we still have weeks of winter left, the recent warm weather was welcomed and brings with it some noticeable changes. Earlier in the week we heard wood frogs calling from a small cove. We boated in to listen, but couldn’t get close because of a submerged tree in our path. Thanks Helene! This time of year we begin to look for signs of trees and plants breaking dormancy and we weren’t disappointed. Looking at the maples and dogwoods on Friday, it’s evident that energy is starting to flow and cellular activity is beginning again. The flower buds are swelling and a hint of color is visible on some trees. We also found a few tiny flower buds on the Oconee Bells, so it won’t be long now. Make sure you put March 15th on your calendars for BellFest 2025. You know… it’s easy to take a spectacular place for granted when you have access to it regularly, but I’m always humbled and reminded when I see this place through the eyes of a first timer. Putting the nose of the boat into Mill Creek falls and letting a guest put their hands in the icy water and watching their eyes fill with joy and tears, makes you even more grateful that your ordinary is someone’s extraordinary.
