BELLS

From a distance, they don't look like much.

Bells!

From a distance, they don’t look like much. Short white flowers above a glossy-leaved groundcover, little bells nodding toward earth. Much like the history of the little plant’s discovery, they might not impress unless you take a closer look. Close up, the white flowers known as Oconee bells are exquisite, with petals as fringed as the buckskin dress of Native American women. Close up, the story of the Oconee bell is the story of human exploration into lands wild and difficult… the Jocassee Gorges. Together, plant and story have helped define the history of this special place. Join us Saturday at Devils Fork State Park for the 7th Annual BellFest, a local celebration of the Oconee bell and its place in the history of the Jocassee Gorges. BellFest brings together humans who celebrate the Oconee bell in wonderful, artistic, creative ways, and humans who simply enjoy their beauty. ~K
