WILDLIFE

We could not believe our eyes.

WILDLIFE

Seven bald eagles in one shallow cove engaged in a feeding frenzy on sick shad which had floated to the surface of the lake. Seven. Four adults, three juveniles, swooping one after another to snatch an easy meal and landing in nearby trees to eat the catch. Nearby, four newly arrived loons were having a feeding frenzy of their own. One eagle left the rest to soar over a low ridge behind the cove but abruptly turned back, two peregrine falcons in hot pursuit. One falcon dove close enough to send the eagle into a corkscrew spiral, mid-air, before it recovered to soar off in a different direction, indifferent to the pursuing falcons. What a show.   ~K
