WALKING THE WOODS

Dry leaves crunch under my boots, announcing my arrival. I’ll not be sneaking up on wildlife, not this season, nor will I be sneaking up on He-Who-Sits-With-Rifle-Across-Lap, which is my point. As a kid I tried to sneak through the woods, hoping to get close enough to deer or rabbit or quail to surprise them. (Never happened.) Now, I’d just as soon let the woods-world know I’m coming. My woods are shared with coyotes and bears and copperheads. If woodland creatures want to hide in the shaded hollows and watch me pass, fine with me. as long as I don’t see them. She-Who-Walks-Loudly probably annoys the heck out of He-Who-Sits-With-Rifle-Across-Lap, and for that I apologize silently, smile, and walk loudly on my way. ~K
