Stand outside during a time of Great Release and witness one of nature’s finest shows, when, seemingly on cue, trees of every species simultaneously drop their leaves. No wind involved, nor is rain a factor. What cues this sudden release? Notice the way they fall, how each species performs a different dance on its way to the ground. Some leaves appear aimless, some drift back and forth with the ease of a baby rocked in a cradle, some spin like a dreidel. They all touch ground with the lightest of sound, bouncing slightly on contact, becoming a warm, nutritious blanket over the span of roots. Their work of converting sunshine to sugar is finished. True, at this time of year leaves are constantly falling, but the fleeting few seconds of the Great Release is different, bordering on magical. For a tree to let go its leaves as they reach their most beautiful stage must be a moment of grace. ~K
