It’s Spring Loon Migration season on Lake Jocassee! And no, it’s not on ESPN nor is it on the big screen at your favorite sports bar, but that’s not saying it shouldn’t be. Astronomical spring begins on Monday, and strong south winds are predicted along the Gulf coast of N Florida starting on Wednesday and blowing through the end of the week. Right on time. The northern Gulf is where most of the loons that arrive this time of year spend their winter. The best day of loon migration on my data sheet is on March 29. There are loons that winter on all the Upstate’s big reservoirs, and they’ll be leaving soon as well. So if you live on one of the Upstate lakes, or will be visiting them over the next month or so, look up! Spring loon migration is one of the great unknown, unheralded natural events that occur in our part of the world. Don’t miss it ~B
