It’s two states really. Two entirely different ecoregions. South Carolina. What a state to live in. Kay and I live near the shore of Lake Jocassee, in the Blue Ridge Escarpment ecoregion. There are an amazing 6 escarpment state parks within an hour’s drive. The Mountain Bridge Wilderness alone encompasses over 10,000 acres. What a place to live. And just a few hours away? The South Carolina coast, home to one of the largest expanses of salt marsh along the East Coast – some 350,000 acres – with 30 percent of its coast preserved. That includes the Deveaux Bank, the largest shorebird rookery in the East Coast, with over 20,000 Hudsonian Whimbrels this time of year, fully half of the entire western hemisphere population. All in one state. Simply amazing. What a state. ~B
