Why do hornets build hives hanging over water? Why do spiders spin strands of silk, face level, across the same path every day? Why doesn’t a perfectly intelligent human learn to avoid a spider web that is in the same place every day?  Why does a monarch caterpillar with yellow, black and white bands turn into an orange butterfly? Why have fall webworm caterpillars been decimating persimmons and sourwood leaves for the past two years? Why do sourwood trees and sparkleberry bushes start with such straight young shoots when they are such crooked plants? Why do some black gum trees signal the coming change of seasons with a single scarlet branch in an otherwise green tree, while others parade a checkerboard of red and green leaves throughout? Why do humans note such oddities?~K
