My eyes open to a spot of brilliant red

WILDLIFE

My eyes open to a spot of brilliant red nestled in the green of mountain laurel. Outside my window,  a male cardinal waits. A rusty-colored female swoops by and he wings away, following her. What an wonder, to see such a sight. Later in the day the dog is walking me down a damp rocky road.  A gray squirrel – a smart little guy – keeps up with us by skittering from one tree to another, to another, to another, following me and dog down the road for a good distance. How do they do that, twenty feet up, tightroping limber branch tips no bigger around than a pencil? Every day wonders. We do take them for granted. ~K
