STINGERS

On a fine spring day such as this I wandered too far from my grandmother’s house, lured by a wide flower border of daffodils and iris blooms, down to a barn that once stabled horses and mules. There, the first memorable sting was delivered to my tender first-grader’s ear by a cranky red wasp. I screamed bloody murder. When I see these wasps fly by today it takes me back to that sudden stab of white-hot pain. Long thin waists, long narrow wings, and long legs stretched out behind as they fly, these vespids represent an order of insects not to be messed with. Warm days bring females up from the ground where they wintered, and soon nest building begins. In these days of extravagant bloom, I look for the nectar-loving creatures, wasps and all, which ensure fertilized seed for future generations. But I still don't mess with them. ~K
