Take a spot of sunshine, accent it with racing stripes and a border of bright blue spots, and let it dance across the sky. There you have it: an Eastern swallowtail butterfly. The Jocassee Gorges are full of these beautiful creatures; around the edge of Lake Jocassee they grace every cove with movement, dipping and soaring on subtle currents of wind created by the meeting of water and rock. In ancient Greek mythology butterflies were psyche, the embodiment and deification of human soul. To have an Eastern tiger swallowtail hover in the midst of a boatload of people in the middle of Lake Jocassee makes one wonder.~K
