Memorial Day officially kicks off the summer season at our area lakes, and our study of nature now includes the study of human nature. Some humans are reverent, absorbing the wonder and mysteries with deep and solemn respect. Some are grateful, appreciative of the experience of swimming in clean, clear, cooling water, grateful for close encounters with waterfalls, grateful for a few hours beyond the range of digital devices. Then there are other humans, oblivious, who play music too loud and curse in a place better suited to quiet reflection and prayer, those who use these rivers and lakes like children on a playground, where everything is done at full throttle until they go home, leaving a trail of trash behind. Perhaps there is a natural human progression from oblivion to gratitude to reverence. ~K
