Right Angles

In awe, we stand at the base of a massive vertical cliff on a floor of bedrock, its undulating layers spelling a story older than time. Above, the river we followed upstream sheets over a fall, sparkling in bright sunlight like a billion liquid diamonds. A shelf of sphagnum moss fifteen feet up speaks of an earlier time, when a younger river had not yet cut through so much solid rock.  The song of river calling down to ocean is gentle, soothing, musical as the solo of a flute, but evidence lays piled around us of raging torrents from other days. Here, a cloudburst would be dangerous to hapless explorers. We climbed long and hard to reach this wondrous place. So worth it. ~K
