I do believe Thoreau had it right when he said,

‘in wildness is the preservation of the world’. Wild places soothe the heart, delight the senses and inspire the mind. Jocassee is a wild place, even though the lake is manmade. Approaching the mouth of the Thompson River, winding your way up Howard Creek, or hiking across the Jocassee Gorges, you’ll have no doubt you are in a wild place, a wilderness. It is perhaps Lake Jocassee’s greatest virtue-it is an avenue deep into our area’s grandest wild place. So bring along your sorrows if you need to, your burdens. Bring them to the shore of Lake Jocassee or to your favorite Jocassee hiking trail and notice how all your problems simply dissipate. That’s the magic of wild places. ~B
